The artist has given the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the UK's independent concert spaces.

Fender was given the award on October 16 as his new release his work was declared the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," stated Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The concept that money from performances in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

He is among several artists to contribute his honor prize money to good deeds.

In they earned the award in 1996 for their album their work, vocalist Cocker declared that the band would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty between several organizations, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," she told outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the local youth club that supported their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners M People contributed their award to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was ample," said singer the singer. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT shared it had protected several local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
